2009 A Year With a Camera or Two
2009 has been an awesome year. As always I took a camera everywhere. Here are some of my favorite photos I took this year:
Air Conditioned Car, For Emergency Use Only | Vancouver, BC

2009 was the year I really started taking advantage of transit. I took the train into the city every time It was needed and took the train/bus combo to work quite a bit. This photo was taken on my way home from a design contract job I was working at the time. I like this photo because of its simplicity and the reflections of the people (including me) in the window. This was one of the first rolls I developed at home in my kitchen.
Grapefruit Lobotomy | At Work
This picture was taken at lunch, at work. I ate a lot of grapefruits this year, usually at my desk while catching up on the days news events. I took this photo with my phone which proved to be a good substitute when I did not have an actual camera with me. “The best camera is the one that you have with you” - Chase Jarvis
Scared | Hope, BC
I went up in a helicopter this year for the first time. I was pretty nervous but it was an awesome experience hanging up high taking photos of the Fraser Canyon.
Seagull | White Rock, BC
Birds are hard to catch, especially with a manual focus lens. This was taken on the pier in White Rock as this seagull was enjoying a clam.
What else is there to do in Yakima, WA? | Yakima, WA
Took a business trip to Yakima, bored in the hotel room. This took many tries to get right and involved me wanging my head on the nightstand. Fun for one.
Meet Brac | Chilliwack, BC
This is Stephanie and Konrad’s dog named Brac. I have known him since he was a puppy. He died this year after living a great, long life. Without a doubt the best dog ever. RIP Brac, I bet you are spinning around and sneezing in doggy heaven.
stefanie portrait 1 | At Home
2009 was the year I started exploring “studio” photography. I still love the look of a one-light portrait, the fade of light to dark made from the off axis key reminds me of looking at the moon. Neat.
bird, you are go for landing | Chilliwack, BC
Again, Birds are hard to catch. I pointed my lens at this bird feeder and waited half an hour to snap this photo. Even at 1/4000 of a second, the humming bird’s wings are blurry! A blue gradient filter was used to darken the sky.
meow | New Westminster, BC
This year we’ve adjusted to living up high, witnessed some great sunsets, police incidents, drunk people, tugboat collisions and the neighbors cat watching us on the deck.
This Weekend | UFV Theatre
I didn’t take this photo. A friend Brent did. I added it in here because It’s a pretty important photo. I got engaged this year to Stefanie. She is pretty awesome and I’m marrying her this October.
The Team | Ride to Conquer Cancer 2009
I found, dismantled, sandblasted, rebuilt and then rode my bike to Seattle raising money for cancer research. It was tough but an awesome experience. 300km later, a beer had never tasted so good.
525 Front St. | New Westminster, BC
This year the props department at the Burr Theatre was cleared out. Everything was free. Lindsay and Michelle lounge on Front Street with their new couch before the trek up the hill.
Justin takes a shower | Kootneay Lake, BC
Severe rain and thunder did not deter the fun on our trip to Kootneay Lake. During a massive downpour, Justin takes a shower in an overflowing gutter.
lumberjack | Kootneay Lake, BC
This is my sister Jenna chopping wood for the fire. This was taken with a pulsed flash during a single long exposure.
Stefanie + Swings | Sardis Elementary School
Frisbee at dusk at my old Elementary school. After a long game of frisbee, Stefanie could not bypass the swings. This summer produced some long days and good memories. Frisbee was the game of the year, from before-breakfast-camping frisbee to 2am-under-a-streetlight-after-costume-party frisbee. Many hours of disc.
Sunset | Galiano Island, BC
Travelled to Galiano Island with a whole caravan of friends. Made camp at Kelsey’s Parents’ Cabin for the weekend. Croquet, exploration and coversation were the themes of the weekend. I snuck away down the shore to take this photo at sunset. Galiano Island is a pretty great place.
My Grandma, on her Birthday | Cultus Lake, BC
The whole family gathered up at the Cabin for my grandma’s Birthday. This is her with her cake. I like this photo because I like my Grandma. This shot was taken on HP5+ with an old Canonet QL17 rangefinder I acquired this year from the craigslist.
Westminster Boiler Company | New Westminster, BC
This is Brent and Marlene, I’ve known them for quite a while. This September we re-enacted their wedding to get some interesting photos. This was my favorite photo of the day, Taken just before complete darkness outside the old Westminster Boiler Company building in New Westminster.
(untitled) | Cultus Lake, BC
New Years Eve 2009, spent with friends playing cards and having fun. A good way to cap off the year. 2010 looks to be even better than 2009. Should have its challenges but also its rewards. Bring it passing of time, Im ready.
If you want to view these photos large as a slide show you totally can.
